The archaeology of the Crane Valley area in the southern Sierra Nevada is home to a large number of archaeological sites. Based on what is known about these sites, it is certain that the sites in this area contain information that would tell us about the contact between different Native North American cultures, as well as how Native Californian people adapted to post-Gold Rush life in the Sierras. Unfortunately, the archaeological record has not been fully explored. Mr. Armstrong will describe what is known, as well as what more may be learned.
Matt Armstrong earned his BA in anthropology from UC Santa Cruz, a certificate in Archaeological Technology from Cabrillo College, and a Masters Degree in Anthropology with a focus in archaeology from UC Santa Barbara. He has been an archaeological researcher and a contract archaeologist, and is currently employed as a Cultural Resources Specialist for PG&E, where he works to ensure compliance with federal and state historic and archaeological preservation laws.
