Data recovery conducted at CA-MNT-461H, the Buena Vista Adobe, during January and February, 1996, was initiated to mitigate the effects of construction for the new Spreckels Middle School to be located at this site. This is the site of an early secular residence (1793-1851+), originally occupied by the Castro and Soberanes families, and later by the Estrada family, before the property passed into Euroamerican ownership. Unique architectural elements were identified through archaeological exposure and archival research. The sequence and period of construction and occupation of two adjacent structures was determined, in part, by a detailed analysis of the artifacts. The original scope of work was enhanced by volunteer participants from the Santa Cruz Archaeological Society under the direction of Rob Edwards and Char Simpson-Smith. The remains of two features encountered during subsequent construction monitoring contributed butchering information from the early and later periods of occupation.
Mr. Hampson is a Registered Professional Archaeologist, and has worked throughout most of California. His first paid archaeology job was with David Fredrickson at Buena Vista Lake, near Taft, California, in 1964. He received his B.A. in Anthropology at San Francisco State University in 1972. From January 1974 to June 1976, he was employed by Del Norte County as an Environmental Services Officer and County Archaeologist, where he prepared Environmental Impact Reports. Paul subsequently attended Hayward State University for graduate studies, and completed an all but Thesis in Anthropology. Thereafter, he worked as an independent consultant, performing some projects on his own, but primarily in association with Archaeological Consulting, of Salinas, California, for approximately eight years, then with Greenwood and Associates, of Los Angeles, for approximately 13 years, followed by almost 19 years with Archaeological Services, Inc., of Stockton, California. He began a specialization in historical typology in 1977, because there was no one available for the project at hand. During his association with Greenwood and Associates, he developed a historical materials database that was later expanded to include prehistoric materials, primarily for lithic analysis. Paul is now retired, and currently lives in Salem, Oregon.
